A guide to participatory experiments with underutilised genetic resources Organic Eprints
Costanzo, Ambrogio; Seroplay, Ester; Rey, Frederic.
Diversifood has undertaken a series of parallel experiments, all testing the same underlying hypothesis expressed in the “working definition” that reintroducing genetic resources with a status of underutilisation can trigger benefits in provisioning agroecosystem services and supporting local, high-quality value chains, in the overall framework of agroecological systems. This booklets considers a diversity of practices and incorporates the experience of the trials and the lessons learned on how to plan and conduct such trials, including practical consideration and tips to facilitate their execution out of the controlled conditions of experimental stations while still obtaining detailed and relevant information. It includes sections on sourcing seed,...

A user-friendly database for Participatory Plant Breeding programs Organic Eprints
Rosenfeld, Simon; Parzies, Heiko; Grando, Stefania; Ceccarelli, Salvatore.
In a decentralized and participatory plant breeding (PPB) program, in contrast to conventional plant breeding, farmers select from a large number of genotypes over a number of cycles in several locations. As selection is for location-specific adaptation a PPB program based on, for example, four stages of selection, generates large, unbalanced data sets. With common spreadsheet software it is not possible, or it is at least very cumbersome to extract all the information, particularly the one that is related to genotype x environment (GE) interactions. Therefore, there is a need for an information system that makes it as easy as possible to retrieve and compare data over all given factors in the PPB-program. Due to a lack of education and financial resources...

Breeding for nitrogen use efficiency in organic wheat systems Organic Eprints
Dawson, J.C.; Murphy, K.M.; Jones, S.S..
Improving crop nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is important to reducing the environmental impacts of agriculture, for both perennial and annual crops. This study tested winter wheat breeding lines developed in organic and conventional systems, historic wheat varieties and perennial wheat under organic management. There were significant differences among selection categories and among genotypes. However, standard methods of measuring NUE may not be appropriate when the breeding objectives are to reduce N use. Alternative methods of evaluating breeding materials, including regression analysis of grain protein deviation (GPD) and principal component analysis (PCA) were explored. GPD was not found to discriminate well between genotypes in this study, but PCA...

Farmer-scientists: Ending corporate control in agriculture Organic Eprints
Opalia , Edgar.
Green Revolution in the Philippines has changed the landscape of agriculture in the country. Fast-tracking agriculture to get higher yields and better income has replaced the traditional farming practices with destructive systems and chemical inputs. Farmers innovations are regarded as backward and obsolete but it did not stop MASIPAG farmers from rediscovering and discovering practices that increases yield and proves that they are the foundation of agriculture.

On farm research for quality of maize. Populations evaluation for old and new recipes in France Organic Eprints
Lebrun, Remy; Chable, Véronique.
Participatory research in South of France aimed to create and exploit diversity on maize. Farmers and researchers have organized an on-farm experiment with traditional and new populations to assess key quality parameters. Population characteristics were evaluated through the different steps of food processes. Chef and cookers have also proposed new recipes to better exploit the diversity.

Participatory Plant Breeding Methods for Organic Cereals Organic Eprints
Desclaux, D..
Formal breeding methods were not always suitable to address the very large diversity of both environmental conditions and end-user needs. Both were frequently encountered either in marginal areas of developing countries or in organic farms of EEC. Participatory plant breeding (PPB) methods represent alternatives aimed to improve local adaptation breeding, to promote genetic diversity, to empower farmers and rural communities. The term PPB refers to a set of breeding methods usually distinguished by the objectives (functional or process approach), institutional context (farmer-led or formal-led), forms of interaction between farmers and breeders (consultative, collaborative or collegial), location of breeding (centralized or decentralized), stage of...

Set up of a methodology for participatory plant breeding in bread wheat in France Organic Eprints
Rivière, Pierre; Pin, Sophie; Galic, Nathalie; de Oliveira, Yannick; David, O.; Dawson, Julie C.; Wanner, A.; Heckmann, R.; Obbellianne, S.; Ronot, B.; Parizot, S.; Hyacinthe, A.; Dalmasso, C.; Baltassat, R.; Bochède, A.; Mailhe, G.; Cazeirgue, F.; Gascuel, J.-S.; Gasnier, R.; Berthelot, J.-F.; Baboulène, J.; Poilly, C.; Lavoyer , R.; Hernandez, M.-P.; Coulbeaut, J.-M.; Peloux, F.; Mouton, A.; Mercier, F.; Ranke, O.; Wittrish, R.; de Kochko, P.; Goldringer, I..
In Organic Agriculture, cultivation environments and agronomic practices are very diverse. This diversity can be handled with decentralized selection based on the knowledge of farmers and scientists. A collaborative work between associations from Réseau Semences Paysannes and the DEAP team from INRA du Moulon set up an innovative breeding approach on farm based on decentralization and participation of farmers. This approach makes it possible to (i) create new population varieties of bread wheat locally adapted (genetic innovation) (ii) set up an organizational scheme based on decentralization and co construction between actors (societal innovation) and (iii) develop experimental designs, create statistical and data management tools which stimulate these...
